| Hello and welcome! Via reading and writing workshops, we have much to learn this year, including: * developing reading comprehension strategies: connections, questioning, inferencing, determining importance, monitoring for meaning, and sensory images * writing according to the 6 + 1 Traits model: ideas, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, organization, conventions & presentation * building vocabulary by looking at words in context, studying roots and affixes and exploring etymologies * communicating and collaborating effectively. We will read and write extensively in many genres and formats. Persuasive and expository writing will be particularly emphasized. A significant amount of classroom time will be devoted to independent reading in order to flex our brains, foster metacognition and apply comprehension strategies.
